10. Mid July I made a life changing decision. I walked into a 3 o’clock hair appointment and plopped down on the chair and said, “Do with me what you will.” One horizontal snip of the shears and I was staring straight into a reflection of the greatest outer appearance change I’ve ever made. For a moment I was shallow and self-involved, “God I look good.” Still today my bangs are my favorite asset.

9. At the end of every semester, college students flock to the bookstore to try to pocket loose change earned back from their overprice textbooks. As tradition goes, students always get suckered into playing promotional games with a chance to win the “grand prize” which is equivalent to that of a steal pretzel. As luck has it, I always walk away with a high calorie candy bar or an XXL NEBRASKA BOOKSTORE t-shirt. 2009 held high hope for me, though. As I spun the wheel, I felt like a contestant on The Price Is Right—watching the 1.00 pass me by but I still had high hopes for that .95. The wheel came to a stop and landed on the biggest joke of 2009…. Snuggie. I won a snuggie?…I won a snuggie…I WON A SNUGGIE! Not quite sure how to react, I went home, put it on and have been wearing it ever since. Don’t knock it ‘till you try it.

8. Spring break—a weeklong holiday made up by MTV to get college kids to engage in activities seemingly worthy of cheap crappy television. I, however, watched Disney channel and spent my spring break in a 10 passenger van, driving across the mid-west to do mission work in Salyerville, Kentucky. I went with close friends as part of an on campus organization CSF—Christian Student Fellowship. We helped build churches in poverty stricken areas as well as getting to experience God—turns out he’s a pretty cool guy.

7. In 2009 I fell in love—with singing and dancing. In early September, FOX introduced the world, along with my roommate Elise and I, to a new form of entertainment—cheesy, feel good sitcom, on steroids. Glee is a sitcom about a high school glee club and all the struggles and stereotypes that go along with high school life, but with a twist. If I had to explain this show in the simplest form I would call it a musical broken down into 30-minute time slots. Now every Wednesday night our apartment is filled with comedy, singing, dancing, and hot boys- I love you Noah!

6. Alex Henery changed the face of Husker football as we know it.

5. Another year, another family vacation. This year the Geists spent quality family time in Colorado. I have to say there is nothing like sharing a twin size hotel bed with Jill—she’s a cuddler, but the real excitement came while at the Rockies vs. Cubs baseball game. Having seats directly behind the Cubs dugout meant no challenge for a little face time with some of my favorite baseball players. Ryan Theriot, not only the Cubs shortstop, but a walking shampoo ad, tossed me a ball and I immediately declared greater self-worth—I think it was the bangs.

4. Fall semester I walked into a class called Creative Concepts. As rumor has it, if you survive the class it will be the most beneficial class offered at the University for advertising. It will change you—the way you think, the way you live your life will be completely changed in less than five months. Ahh pishposh, I thought to myself. On the first day of class our teacher held up a water bottle and asked us, “what is this?” Guys, water bottle was the wrong answer. So began the transformation. Every week we were assigned problems in the form of projects that needed to be solved in the most creative way. Turns out being creative is virtually impossible when you have work, mounting stress from school, downtown Lincoln calling your name and social networks like facebook distracting you. My Sunday nights were filled with peanut butter m&m inspired creativity, all nighters, and late trips to Kinkos. But as promised I was changed, and like a caterpillar I woke up one day with these beautiful wings ready to fly. I have never felt so inspired and passionate as I do towards creative advertising. It’s all warm fuzzy feelings.

3. The emergence of the Twitter monster. Just when you think your parents can’t get any more embarrassing, they go off and tweet about it. This year, Twitter has become my ultimate news source, all things funny search engine, blog, and 24-hour dose of Russ and Lisa. This dynamic duo has tweeter their way into my heart. Now the whole family is tweeting, including Grammy. I think we’re all closer for it. You know what they say, a family who tweets together… totally kicks ass (earmuffs, Jackson)

2. Lady Gaga.

1. …and then I got a phone call. “Maggie I’m pregnant.” It’s not mine, don’t worry. October 6, 2009 my favorite sister-in-law gave birth to the most anticipated baby of 2009. Jackson Cole Geist. I irresponsibly skipped night class and drove down to Omaha. I didn’t know him, but I loved him.Jackson couldn’t have come at a more perfect time in my life and I’m so excited to be apart of his life and watch him grow in the year 2010.

An epidemic has swept the nation and I am here to address the problem. Now most of us aren’t aware of this problem because most of us are, in fact, the problem. I would like to take a short break from blogging to tell a story.

Aham…

…the other day I was briskly making my way from the parking garage to my 1:30 history class clear across campus. I am an observer; I like to observe people, then go home and make fun of them at night to build my self esteem—it’s terriable I know. On my walk I took note of the boy with the pink book bag, the chick wearing black leggings with brown boots and the male that walked passed that same chick, turned back around for a second glance, followed by my personal favorite pickup line, “Daaaaaaanng.” I wasn’t more than half way to my class when I almost rolled my ankle jumping out-of-the-way of a bicyclist. Ok I am being a little dramatic, but still, rude on his part. And that is when I first took note of this fatal epidemic. Again, next week, I noticed it when that guy walked passed me with his head down, accompanied by a big old grin on his face– what the hell is he laughing about? Oh, and when that girl almost walked herself right into a bench on the side of the walkway—that was really funny, but life threatening at the same time.

Story ends.

What is this source that seized their conscience causing them to run over bold figures right in their path, or smile and laugh uncontrollably out of no where—um hi, I can see you randomly smiling and laughing and I am creeped out. Ok, I feel like I’m rambling and I am almost certain this suspense is killing you. I am just gonna say it– Text messaging while moving in a forward motion is nation sweeping and if no one puts an end to this act I anticipate a depleting population.

Am I being a little dramatic? Maybe? Let me just console my rolled ankle and I’ll get back to you.

I would say I spend a good 15 minutes in front of my mirror before I partake in my daily endeavors. But why is it that I don’t notice my flawed face until I am half way down the road and glance into my car’s sun visor mirror? I then manage to catch a full body reflection in a building window and regret the unflattering top that magnifies my self-induced beer belly, or curse my inter psyche for allowing me to think I could wear this knee high dress, revealing my 23 inch diameter thighs, that haven’ t seen the slightest bit of sunlight this summer—it’s still summer right? If I had only known my appearance reflected like this in natural light I would have introduced my face to some foundation and stuck to light beer last weekend. Either way, here I am, spending the next six hours of my day avoiding any human contact.

Maybe I should care more? It’s not about being shallow and vain, it’s about self respect—which is something I have always struggled with when it comes to my appearance. I think I will start spending 20 minutes in front of the mirror from now on. I am a firm believer in baby steps. This is a self-proclamation I intend to keep. I swear, if it wasn’t for frizzy hair and hips, this worrisome mind could be put to way better use.

So I guess this is the post where I awkwardly introduce my blog.

When I was in sixth grade my friend Elise decided to dress as Raggedy Ann for Halloween, I was Andy. She bought a flat iron and had amazing results, so I withdrew the last portion of my detasseling funds and purchased my very own flat iron in hopes to replicate the straightness of her locks. Elise started kissing boys, so I figured it was a safe bet that I too would enjoy kissing boys. As we got older I found myself using her as a reference point for decision making. She majored in Advertising and convinced me of all its wonders, so I majored in Advertising and found more than just a potential degree but a real passion. Elise was the one that went out and bought skinny jeans—she looked good, so I went out and bought a pair of skinny jeans, ( after borrowing hers for 5 months), and now I look good.

Everything up to this point has described me as a follower. A bit embarrassed, I would like a chance to explain. Elise is like Mary Poppins—practically perfect in every way. You would be an idiot not to value her opinion and savvy way of life. She has done nothing but lead me to wonderous worlds and loads of happiness— now she sounds like Jesus? Anyways, to make a long heart felt story short—Elise started a blog so I started a blog.
